The insidious

This is an over the shoulder shot from the camera’s point of view, so we can see the devil behind the protagonist and the protagonist’s face, that shows us that he hasn’t got a clue that there is a devil behind him, which makes the audience want to scream out and warn him, which is a good way of engaging the audience. Both of the characters are more on the right side of this shot, so we can only see a half of the devil’s face, which makes this even scarier because it seems like he just literally appeared from nowhere. This shot is very much from the camera’s point of view, so it makes us feel like we are there, especially when we are standing at an eye level to them.

This is a close up shot of another daemon that wants to get in that little boys’ body. It is very much at an eye level to us, which makes us think that she is looking at us. This shot is a close up to scare us, because now we can see that the woman is in fact so scary because of how ugly she is; her eyes have black circles around her eyes, she is dressed in black, her teeth look black and she has in general, a very manly looking face. In this shot, we can see her and the candle, which she is holding. We can see this to represent that there is no other way of making light, because it is very dark there, which gives the audience a sense of hopelessness and also because candles themselves are mainly shown is horror films, because it shows something spooky, and adds to the typical conventions of a horror.
This is a long shot of the possessed boys’ bedroom. It is a long shot, so we can clearly see the composition of this shot; The devil at the corner of his room and the body of the boy in his bedroom. I believe that the devil is in the corner, because it is the darkest there, and the plot did not want to reveal the full description of the devil, which shows that this must have been at quite early stages of the film and also shows half of his siluate which creates a tension because this is the first time that we have met the devil and just from the siluate he looks really scary. We can also see that this shot is from someone else’s point of view, because it seems like the devil is almost communicating with them, by pointing at the body of the little boy, which automatically shows us that the devil wants to take him.  Also this shot has been done in black and white. This reveals that this could have been someone’s dream and that’s why it is not in its real colour.

This is a two shot of another ghost and the protagonist (boy’s father). This shot is also a close up shot of them too yet; our focus is mainly on the ghost- woman because the protagonist especially shines a lamp to see for himself what this ghost actually looks like. There is a big contrast between one of the previous shot and this shot; it is the shot of the ghost woman carrying a candle and the fact that a human- the protagonist is not carrying a candle to see his way around as he is using a lamp, which shows the difference between the characters and those who are dead and those who are alive as candles represent death a lot more than a lamp, therefore it makes more sense for the ghost to be carrying the candle and the human to be carrying the lamp. The woman face is very pale looking, which automatically suggests that it is a ghost, but also she looks like she has been quite an upper class woman, due to the pearl necklace around her neck and the way her make-up was supposed to look like, but now is very warned out because we can see the smudged lipstick around her mouth and the smudged mascara around her eyes. The shining light makes her skin look even more ghostly looking like. The way she is standing there in a trans and not paying any attention to the protagonist suggests that they are trapped in that place, and too hoping to get back on in the human’s body, because the way she is glancing onto nothing suggest that this thing does not have a soul.

This is a close up shot of the devil’s hand. We know that is a devil’s hand, because we can see the long nail at the ends of the fingertips and also because it is in the red colour. Also in this shot we can see the boy’s leg, which shows that devil has done that on the boy’s sheet, which stresses more the fact that the devil wants him, which must have been very frightening for the mother especially now she knows that her boy is actually not in coma, but somewhere in another world. We could say, to make the audience focus more on the hand, they have used the golden mean to do this shot, so we can see the points of interest, which in this case, would run diagonally trough the hand. This is done because it makes it look more dramatic, and to make sure that it makes the audience react in a very shocked and frightening way.
