Analyses of two thriller genres

-Sixth sense

First of all, we see the conversation between the mother and the son. Boys face looks scared he is telling her terrible information that freaks her out because he is claiming that he can see dead people/diagetic sound-  “ghost” he says that in a very sharp, way. He Claims that ghosts used to hurt him, he seems traumatised, which is not the normal way that a child speaks.
Two shot, but we focus more on the boy, due to his expression. Their eyes are going through the golden mean. The conversation is done by mid shot so we can see clearly the mothers expression and the way that the boy talks. This conversation is important because he is trying to get help from his mother because he is so low- high angle shot looking at him shows innocence and he looks very frightened and we want to know how his mum is going to react.
There is an Unconventional part as he tells her that the dead women is next to his window, we don’t get no scary and tensed music to indicate the confession, which is because the story is trying tio tell us that these things are normal to him so for him it is no surprise anymore.
Close up of his mothers reaction indicates shock, and now she is acting very conventional and how we want her to react. The way that she is looking out of the window, she is checking to see if there is something that she can see too. The mid shot of the dead woman now that we see her, we believe what he is saying. It is unconventional because it is from his mum’s point of view but she can’t see the woman.
Zooming on him to see the expression. There is no non -diagetic sound perhaps we don’t need it because it is very dramatic anyway, so the quiet is needed as it mirrors the ghost conversation. There are Straight cuts all the time when they are speaking and it is not that quick as  they are more focusing on the dialog and emotions.
Panic in her eyes, as soon as he said that his grandma saw his mum dance. She is trying to convince herself that her son is just a regular child she knows that she has to believe him. He wants his mum to understand that he is not making it up, we can see that in his face. His mum gets very upset because she can’t get her words out because she’s too upset and she knows that he is not lying.

-Terminator
The lighting is quite dark, but there is a red light at the background. The camera goes right in front of him which makes us feel like he is coming after us.  The Props are the bottle of vodka  that she has dropped, which shows clumsiness from anxiety. Another Prop is the fact that he gets caged but then he comes out, which shows him like some sort of an animal coming out of his cage, the moment that we think that he can’t get passed that cage. The moment he walks out.  The music is very conventional when the background music stops as he is moving through the crowd of people and goes into an echoic sound that shows us the concentration on his face, as he is concentrating to get the woman. The Slow motion shows that he blanks out everyone else that is there and concentrates on that particular woman the actual slow motion indicates tension because we know that she has more time to escape. Red light mirrors the atmosphere of the red colours there- it is very tensed and the red colour also indicates danger. Point of view shot and low angle shot, shows dominance.  NON diagetic sound- “u’re got me burning, ull never let me go” lirics, he is never gunna let her go as he’s there to kill her.

Tech noir flashes at the background, the flashing lights also show danger and panic. She  ducks down so he misses her almost as if she knew that he is going for her.  The red light going through his head makes him look like some sort of a machine, which he is. The women there are wearing bright colours and he wears dark military colours so we know that he does not fit in, as if he wasn’t even from that planet. The woman dancing, was wearing a red skirt, which shows danger and anger, and a leopard top which again, indicates danger, and also the rapidness of the bloke (how quickly he has managed to find her) almost as if he could smell her, just like a wild animal can, in this case, Leopard.

The main difference between these two thriller scenes is that the subgenre for these thrillers is completely different. The 6th sense is a psychological thriller, because as we have read before, the scene plays with the audience’s minds, and in fact, the characters too, whereas the terminator is a sci-fi thriller which explains the terminator, being like out of this planet. The terminator is dramatic in a way that is expressed by the flashing lights and the bright colours, whereas the 6th sense is quite calm but dramatic in a way from what people are actually saying. In the 6th sense, there is not non-diegetic music, only diegetic, but on the other hand, in the Terminator, we have the non diegetic music playing in the background, the lyrics mirror what is actually happening, but no non diegestic. The bottom line is that there are both thrillers, but different genres and different conventions. Either way they are both very effective in their own way.
